DAYS 90-94, Thu APRIL 29TH TO MON May 3RD 2021 – Beautiful Sofia
After arriving to Sofia we needed just a short break.. After sleeping, relaxing and eating we headed out to see the city night life. Our gracious hosts (Lara, Ana and Carolina) were nice enough to consider our music taste and we headed for a rock club. Pedro was there also and Bruno (Portuguese friend of our hosts) who was the only who had been to the club before. After some difficulty we found the place on one backyard, but it turned out at least that night it was more dance music there played by a DJ, so after the first drinks we continued forward. This time is was Pedro who knew where to go. He had heard on the way loud metal music coming from some bar window and we decided to find this place. Well it was not exactly a metal club. As we arrived to the location there was just a door with no sign and some dude standing in front of it. This nice gentleman told us with a smirk on his face there was a bar, but it was not open. Soon after he led us up the stairs winking his eye and still insisting that the bar is closed.. Well it was an Irish bar with karaoke night and a private birthday party and quite a strong gay vibe, so I guess perfect for us.
I can remember at least me and Carolina sang some songs. We met some new people and had really fun night. I do not know the name of the bar, but if you ever travel to Sofia, look it up. It is right there almost upstairs from Hesburger. Head to Vitosha walking street from Serdika metro station. Just when the walking street starts there is a McDonalds and Hesburger.
Sadly Hesburger was closed so I had to save the best food for later. It is a Finnish chain and seems to be all over Bulgaria.
Next day we went out to eat. The girls had heard from somewhere there was a good Bulgarian restaurant and we did not resist on the idea to go there. It for sure was not a mistake. The food and the service at restaurant Moma was great.
I tried my tactic of ordering a surprise food and I have a feeling I got the best dish. Afterwards it was time to see some of the city. We headed down the walking street to the park next to the Cultural Palace. I really like it here. The city looks beautiful and the mountain scene does not hurt.
The weather was perfect and we decided to continue to a park to hang out with Angel, Erasmus coordinator, self made tour guide and a man of endless energy. On the way to the park we almost ended up in trouble as we were told we don’t need to pay for the bus and immediately as we stepped in there were 2 women asking for the tickets. Luckily it was a wrong bus and the guy who first told it was the correct one then told us it was the wrong and in the middle all the chaos we managed to skip the inspection and jumped of the next station. Actually this was not the only occation like this. When going to the metro we were told the same and going through the gates 2 persons at time, the ticket sales / security person started to shout at us. From that on we decided we follow our own mind and feeling and pay for the tickets.
We did manage to the park and met Angel there, he was immediately telling us of several different things we could do in Bulgaria. There was a plan forming for a road trip for later and more urgently a trip to the local mountain.
Later we went to a metal
club Rock’n Rolla Bar & Club where are we had some karaoke, just a bit rougher style than
the previous night.
We booked an Airbnb in the city center and after eating at the downstairs Chinese restaurant we packed our stuff leaving the heavy stuff for storage.
As we planned to go around it did not make sense to carry all the extra stuff with us. The Airbnb was right there next to the main walking street with all the shops and restaurants. For a such street it is pretty nice. I usually am not a big fan of such places but Sofia and the Bulgarians seem calm and peaceful enough to make it a nice place. Lot of different restaurants where you can eat out, street musicians and few beggars here and there.
The place we booked was right there and on the second floor our windows to the buzzling street, but luckily the windows were some special sound proof ones and blocked almost all noise from the street. The restaurants along the main street are maybe not the best option as we found out. The good ones are ofter few blocks away in my experience.
We walked around the center, saw some cool places and ended up in a park. The city is quite green, having lot of trees around and several parks. This park was special as it finally was a place where lot of people were playing chess. Gamze had been looking for such place the whole trip. As this is really not for me I returned to the house to work on this blog while Gamze stayed there and got to play with the locals. This is somehow now very karaoke filled trip as the night ended again in one.
